Iwert Bernakiewicz (Genk, 1970) is opgeleid als architect en combineert zijn fotografische vaardigheden met twee decennia ervaring in architectuurontwerp en -onderwijs.
Zijn artistieke werk daagt onze waarneming uit. Het algemene thema ‘FRAG’ dient als acroniem en werkthema: ‘for real, augmented gazing’. Tegelijkertijd is het het Duitse woord voor ‘vraag’, het constant in vraag stellen van onze (menselijke) acties en omgeving.
Iwert’s ervaring in architectonisch ontwerp stelt hem in staat de driedimensionale ruimte in vraag te stellen, de ‘werkelijkheid’ te transformeren in tweedimensionale representaties en twee-en-half-dimensionale sculpturen die uitvouwen en gecondenseerde parallelle realiteiten tonen.
In zijn kaleidoscopische beelden wordt gewichtloosheid geïntroduceerd om architectuur en ruimte in parallelle werelden te verdichten, nieuwsgierigheid aan te wakkeren en daardoor onze omgeving in vraag te stellen. In zijn papieren sculpturen worden menselijke (inter) acties teruggebracht tot hun uiterste minimum voor een maximale expressie.
Hij gebruikt fotografie, maquettebouw en papiersculpturen actief als onderzoeks- en documentatiemiddel in zijn werk met studenten van de UHasselt, in scenografie en als kunstenaar, visueel reflecterend op menselijke interacties, architectuur, onze natuurlijke omgeving en onszelf.
De actuele uitbraak van het corinavirus en de respectievelijk noodzakelijke lockdown inspireerden Bernakiewicz tot een dynamische installatie voor smartlab ACT XIII...
LOAP / 11 pla(ne)tes:
Experiment van een klein universum van 11 planeten, bestaande uit 14 'geleende' panlatten, 22 lasdraden, een draaitafel en 11 papieren borden, die als planeten een gesloten systeem vormen. Ontstaan ergens het derde weekend van de ‘corona-lockdown’ in België, de serie ‘LOAP’ (life on a plate) overdenkend. Leven, menselijke ontmoetingen verbeeldend, die vanuit een papieren bord tevoorschijn komen.
Deze gecondenseerde realiteiten worden samengebracht in een planetair systeem die apart van elkaar leven. Elke ‘pla(ne)te’ een systeem op zich, zoals in ‘le petit prince’ van Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, waarbij je hier echter gevangen blijft binnen de grenzen van het bord, elk beperkt tot de eigen actie en ruimte, solo of soms met een mogelijke metgezel. Zo wordt het een ruimtelijke afbeelding van ‘social distancing’ een term die ons tot voor kort onbekend was.
I. ladderman (de ene)
Ladderman staat op en kijkt over de rand. Probeert hij te communiceren met ‘de ander’?
II. een huis optrekken
Een figuur die een huis uit de aarde trekt. Is het een couveuse voor de persoon of een serre voor het verzorgen van planten? Hoe dan ook, er is een plek gedefinieerd.
III. denker aan de rand
Een denker, een schaduw werpend, of er net uit ontstaand? Misschien zit hij klem aan de rand van het gat dat zijn schaduw heeft gemaakt, denkend hoe hij uit een zelf gecreëerde situatie kan komen.
IV. fietswandeling
Een koppel (niet ‘gewoon vrienden’), wandelend hand in hand, vertragen ze tussen hun fietsen en definiëren een ruimte binnen hun ruimte.
V. boswandeling
De enige pla(ne)te met een bos. Leeft de bevolking van twee in overeenstemming met de natuur? Het lijkt erop dat deze pla(ne)te een centrale plaats inneemt in het systeem.
VI. ladderman (de andere)
Ladderman staat op en kijkt over de rand. Probeert hij in contact te komen met ‘de ene’?
VII. het zelfportret van de kunstenares
Een kunstenares, zichzelf bestuderend, terugdeinzend, peinzend. Is dit de kleinst mogelijke ruimte? Het in jezelf kijken? Die plek zelf kan echter enorm zijn, hoe onzichtbaar op het eerste gezicht ook.
VIII. let op de put
Een gat met een waarschuwingsteken, waardoor de nieuwsgierige figuur het wel moet bestuderen, voorzichtig om niet voorover te struikelen en verloren te gaan in de ruimte.
IX. tête à tête
Twee mensen maken zich klaar om te gaan zitten, praten. Is het een serieus gesprek of een eerste ontmoeting?
X. de levensdans van goed en slecht
Een duivel en een engel houden elkaar in balans. Een delicate evenwichtsoefening, deze levensdans.
XI. de hond uitlaten
Iemand die de hond uitlaat, gelukkig is er een lantaarn op zijn pla(ne)te om de hond wat opluchting te geven. Of laat de hond de persoon uit?

Installatie van 14 geleende houten stokken, een draaiplateau, 22 stuks verkoperd lasdraad, kleefprut en 11 laser gesneden papieren borden met uitgeplooide figuren.
De installatie inspireerde Jo Klaps tot een song... vervolgens de soundtrack voor Iwert's clip.

'Synchronicity has nothing to do with order, but everything with chaos.’
Belgium based architect / photographer, Iwert Bernakiewicz (º1970), is
educated as an architect and blends his photography skills with two decades of experience in architectural design and education.
His artistic work challenges our observation. The overal theme ‘FRAG’, serves as an acronym and working theme: ‘for real, augmented gazing’. At the same time it is the German word for ‘ASK’, the constant questioning of our (human) actions and surroundings.
Iwert’s experience in architectural design allows him to question three dimensional space, transforming ‘reality’ into two dimensional representations and fold-out two and a half dimensional sculptures showing condensed parallel realities.
In his Kaleidoscopic views weightlessness is introduced to condense architecture and space into parallel worlds, tackling curiosity and thereby questioning our surroundings. In his paper sculptures human (inter)actions are reduced to their extreme minimum for a maximum of expression.
He actively uses photography, model building and paper sculptures as a research and documenting tool in his work with students at Hasselt University, in scenography and as an independent artist, reflecting visually on human interactions, architecture, our natural environment and self.
The coronacrisis inspired Bernakiewicz to come up with a dynamic installation for smartlab ACT XIII... LOAP/ 11 pla(ne)tes:
Testing a little universe of 11 planetes, composed out of 14 ‘borrowed’ sticks, 22 steel wires, a turning table and 11 plates, figuring as planets in an enclosed system. Built the third ‘corona’ lock down weekend in Belgium, while contemplating the LOAP series. Life on a plate, figuring scaled down human encounters, emerging from a plate.
Those condensed realities are combined in a planetary system. Each a living system on their own, like ‘le petit prince’ of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, but unable to reach over the border here, confined to their own action and space, solo or sometimes with a possible companion.
I. Ladderman (the one)
Ladderman stands up and looks over the edge. Is he trying to communicate with ‘the other’?
II. Pulling a house
A figure pulling a house from the earth. Is it a shelter for the person or a shelter for taking care of plants? Anyway, a spot is defined.
III. thinker on the edge
A thinker, emerging from his own shadow, or casting it? Maybe stuck to the border by the hole his shadow created, thinking how to get out of a self-made situation.
IV. bikewalk
A couple, not ‘just friends’, walking hand in hand, slowing down in between their bikes, defining a space within a space.
V. a walk in the woods
The sole pla(ne)te with a forest. Is the population of two living in tune with it’s nature? It seems this pla(ne)te takes a central place in the constellation.
VI. ladderman (the other)
Ladderman stands up and looks over the edge. Is he trying to communicate with ‘the one’?
VII. the paintress self portrait
A paintress, studying her self, standing back a little. The smallest space possible? Looking into one’s self? However that place could be huge, however invisible at first glance.
VIII. mind the gap
A hole with a warning sign, so the curious figure has to study it, carefull not to trip over and get lost in space.
IX. tête à tête
Two people, getting ready to sit down and have a talk. Is it a serious talk or a first encounter?
X. dance of life, good and bad
The devil and an angel holding each other in equilibrium. A delicate balancing act, this dance of life.
XI. walking the dog
A person walking the dog, luckily there is one lantern on his pla(ne)te to bring the dog some relief. Or is the dog walking the person?
