NAUWAU (voorheen Atelier Nauwau, 2013) is het samenwerkingsverband tussen Rayah Wauters, haar echtgenote Niels Arnauts en haar zus Shana.  Zij delen de liefde voor hout (Niels is arborist en Rayah interieur- en meubelontwerper) doch hun strijd met het materiaal verschilt. 

Niels velt (enkel die) bomen die omwille van ziekte, ouderdom of stormschade geveld moeten worden. Hieruit put Rayah haar grondstof met als enige beperking dat ze het stuk fysiek de baas moet kunnen.  Dit laatste relativeert Rayah meteen met de quote: “het is een strijd die eigenlijk niet gevoerd moet worden… de natuur wint altijd, wij zijn de marionettes met de witte vlag”.  Het materiaal domineert het ontwerp.  Functionaliteit is van bijkomend belang.

De openings-act was performance-gewijs deel van de Hasseltse Kunstennacht op 9 mei. 

Buiten NAUWAU en een groot stuk van een oude plataan deed ook een kettingzaag voor het eerst zijn intrede in smartlab.  ACT XI zal gedurende mei en juni een work in progress zijn …met (IN)ZICHT aan het einde.

(IN)SIGHT - NAUWAU (former Atelier Nauwau, 2013) is the cooperation between Rayah Wauters, her husband Niels Arnauts and her sister Shana.   Although their struggle is different, their love for wood (Niels -being an arborist- and Rayah -being an interior and furniture designer-) is equal. Niels only chops trees that need to be chopped (because of age, illness or storm damage,…).  Parts of them become Rayah’s resource…

"The material is dominant to the enactment of the design.  Actually, there is no such thing as design since its shape has been outlined by nature.  It is by bounding these raw elements that a design becomes materialised in clean and untainted archetypes where functionality is secundary." For ACT XI a huge piece of an old platan was brought in …as well as a chainsaw. (IN)SIGHT will be a work in process during the month of May and June… starting from 3 big pieces of wood.  The opening act was -performance-wise- part of Kunstennacht -the Hasselt Art Night- on May 9.  The act will permanently be streamed live… until the (in)sight at the end.
